Dons Place 4th in Annual SAC Women’s Basketball Tournament

SANTA ANA, Calif. - The Santa Ana Women's Basketball team placed fourth in their annual tournament that was held from Thursday, December 1st through Saturday, December 3rd. 

On day one, the Dons sustained an early lead to defeat Bakersfield 69-65 and advanced to the winners bracket. Selena Hernandez dropped 32 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Brianna Urena added 14 points, five assists and three boards to lead the Dons. 

Santa Ana then matched up with a Miracosta team that was coming off a 45-41 win against Porterville on day one. The Dons found themselves in a close one with Spartans  as the score was tied at 24-24 at halftime. But SAC saw the game slip away as they were outrebounded 25-12 in the second half and held to just 25 points on 9-of-31 shooting from the field. Santa Ana dropped the game by a score of 55-49 to set up a third palace game against San Diego Mesa. 

On Saturday, the Dons were unable to bounce back as they were beaten once again, this time by a score of 65-43.

San Diego Mesa looked comfortably in control until Santa Ana made their run to cut the deficit to 10 (48-38) on a free throw from Henrnandez with 8:01 remaining in the game. But the Dons would not get any closer as the Olympians responded and pushed the lead back into the 20s over the ensuing four minutes. 

Following the tournament, Santa Ana sits at a record of 4-5 with six games left in the month of December. The Dons will be back in action on the 13th to face LA Pierce on the road in another non-conference game.
