Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball: Mounties sweep Bakersfield, 5-0 in non-conference match

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball team played its third home match at "Mountie Beach" on campus and came away with a 5-0 non-conference sweep over visiting Bakersfield on Friday (Feb. 18.)

With the win, the Mounties improved to 3-2 overall for the season.

"This is my favorite time of the year," Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball coach Danielle Diaz said. "The environment and just being in the sun is great.

"I think we're taking control of the teams that we need to beat and the teams that are at a higher level, we're barely losing to them. I'm really proud of us playing at our level. I remind them that I think we are one of the best in-shape teams that we've played so far cardio-wise."

Three of the five Mountie pairs won in straight sets and the remaining two went the distance in three sets for the sweep over the renegades.

The 1's with Riley DeGroot and Allison Whiteman went the distance defeating Bakersfield, 21-16, 19-21, 15-8.

"I'm just happy we won," DeGroot said. "These are very nice temporary courts and I'm excited to see the new ones (under construction this year).

"I think we (Whiteman) compliment every other a lot."

Mt. SAC will break ground soon on the new beach volleyball complex adjacent to the soccer complex on campus.

Whiteman, who along with DeGroot, led the Mounties to the postseason in the past indoor season, also saw the connection with DeGroot.

"I think that during indoors we had a really good connection and it's awesome that we made it even stronger and now we're partners," Whiteman added. "I love this sport a lot and having a touch for every single ball gives us a lot of control of the play."

The other three-set match saw the 3's, JJ Quarrels and Diana Pelcastre come away with a come-from-behind win, 12-21, 21-15, 15-8.

The two set sweeps were by 2's - Riannel Arevalo/Bristol Christelman, 21-11, 21-14; 4's – Alicia Patterson/Savanna Corrales, 21-14, 21-14 and 5's – Kylie Rhodes/Victoria Arnold, 21-13, 21-6.

Mt. SAC continues non-conference action with another home match on Friday (Feb. 25) against Santa Ana.
