BC & CERRITOS TRADE BLOWS IN HOMECOMING WIN

Derrick Vickers continued his assault on opposing defenses and the ears of those who don't like the sound of loud cannon blasts with another huge effort on Saturday night.

Vickers amassed 230 yards from scrimmage and scored three touchdowns to lift Bakersfield College to a 28-21 National-Northern Conference victory over Cerritos College at Memorial Stadium.

The redshirt sophomore running back/wide receiver had 22 carries for 191 yards and four receptions for 39 yards to help the Renegades improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Vickers, the state leader in touchdowns (16) and points scored (96), has scored at least one TD in each of BC's seven games this year.

The 2013 All-American used his speed and elusiveness to put BC ahead for good at the 8:55 mark of the fourth quarter with a 23-yard touchdown run.

Cerritos, winners of three of its previous four games, led 14-7 before Cesar De Leon connected with Jasmit Thind for a 10-yard touchdown pass that drew BC even late in the second quarter.

Vickers, who scored the game's first points via a 4-yard TD run early in the second quarter, put BC back on top, 21-14, with a 23-yard touchdown run six minutes into third quarter.

The Falcons (3-4, 1-1) answered with an 8 play, 80-yard town drive to tie the game.

But Vickers and the rest of the Renegades wouldn't be denied a Homecoming victory in front of crowd of 5,122 mostly partisan supporters.

"We were hurt from the last game," Vickers told The Bakersfield Californian's Jeff Evans after the victory. "We came into practice this week and had a purpose. We dug deep. We came out here and fought."

De Leon finished 7 of 11 for 84 yards passing in relief of Dalton Gallis, who was 7 of 11 for 94 yards and had two interceptions.

The BC defense surrendered 389 yards but came up with several big stops in the second half.

Vickers' 16 touchdowns this season have come in a variety of ways. The 6-foot, 196-pound Bakersfield High graduate has eight touchdowns rushing, four receiving and one on a 93-yard kickoff run.

Two years ago, Vickers set a BC record for most touchdowns scored one game with five against Moorpark.

The Renegades' next game is Saturday on road against Santa Monica (2-6, 0-2). Opening kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
