Footballs Falls to Ventura On Homecoming

BAKERSFIELD, CA – On Homecoming night at Memorial Stadium, the Bakersfield College Renegades dropped their conference opener to the now overall 5-1 and #4 team in the state, Ventura College Pirates 29-21.

BC trailed 19-14 after a first half that featured four fumbles and two turnovers between both teams. VC capitalized on the Renegades mistakes early in the first quarter to the tune of 10 points via a touchdown and the first of their 5 field goals for the game.

Three minutes into the second quarter, running back Isaiah Martin put Bakersfield on the board and woke up the crowd scoring BC's first touchdown of the game. Another Renegade turnover would lead to the third Pirate field goal and taking a 16-7 lead. A 33-yard touchdown by running back Shane Jones brought BC to within two before VC added another field goal just before the end of the half sending the Pirates to the locker room with a 19-14 lead.

Eight minutes into the third quarter a Pirates scoring drive led to a touchdown and a 26-14 lead.

Looking to give the team a spark in the 3rd quarter, backup quarterback Larry Harrington converted on a third and eight scampering for 12 yards to keep BC alive. A half back option touchdown pass by Jones good for 26 yards to wide receiver Cole Beaty brought BC to within five points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Renegades were unable to come back all the way as the Pirates would finish the game with a field goal resulting in the final score of 29-21.

BC now stands at 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference. The Renegades will next be at home in Memorial Stadium taking on the Vikings of Long Beach City College this coming Saturday, Oct. 26th at 6pm.
