Halloween Comes Early as Football Falls Late to the Vikings

BAKERSFIELD, CA – A successful field goal that bounced off the crossbar was taken off the scoreboard as the Bakersfield College football team elected to accept a penalty on the play hoping to continue their drive toward the end zone. The drive later stalled, and the next field goal attempt was blocked. This decision came back to haunt the Renegades as BC (2-5, 0-2) fell to Long Beach City College 23-20 when the Vikings scored the game winning touchdown with 42 seconds remaining on the clock.

A late scoring drive in the first quarter at 2:27 resulted in a 27-yard field goal giving Long Beach the first points of the game. In the second quarter from the Bakersfield 13, running back Isaiah Martin caught three consecutive passes giving BC a second and goal. A quarterback sneak by Braden Wingle results in the first touchdown for the Renegades and a 7-3 lead at 12:34 left in the half. Later in the quarter freshman Malik Delouth hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass putting BC up by 11. An eight-play drive in the final 1:25 nutted a Vikings first touchdown with two seconds remaining in the half as the Renegades headed to the locker room leading 14-10.

Bakersfield converted on a Long Beach turnover early in the third quarter with a Paxton Winders 45-yard field goal stretching the BC lead 17-10.

The `Gades finished their scoring on the night with another Wingle field goal in the fourth quarter with 10:24 left. At the time BC held a 20-10 lead, however LBCC scored the game's final 13 points and the victory.

The Renegades will head out for the road for two games playing East Los Angeles first this coming Saturday (11/2) at 6pm and then Moorpark City College on Saturday (11/9) before they return home for the final home game of the season on November 16th.
