BAKERSFIELD, CA- The Bakersfield College Renegade football team opened the 2022 season in grand fashion with a convincing 59-12 victory over the visiting LA Pierce Brahmas Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
After a Brahmas scoring drive was thwarted by an endzone interception by Bakersfield's Chris Thompson, the Gades increased their lead to 14 after a nine play 87-yard drive as Campbell scored the second touchdown of the game for BC.
The Renegades special teams made their presence felt again by recovering a fumble from the Pierce punter at the Brahmas two-yard line as freshman Dylan Tooker recovered the ball and took it into the endzone increasing BC's lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Bakersfield went up 28-0 less than four minutes into the second quarter as running back Antonio Robinson scampered in for a 10- yard touchdown at the 11:11 mark.
The Gades next score, was again set up by its special teams' as Tooker tackled Pierce's punter on a fourth downplay giving BC the ball inside the 10-yard line. Two plays later running back Jaron Amos scored Bakersfield's fifth touchdown of the game, 35-0.
Pierce finally got on the board as BC's defense was flagged for 71 penalty yards during their 79-yard drive. Renegades kick returner Jaquell Bonner then took the ensuing kick 85-yards for a touchdown and sophomore Anyale Velazquez added another score giving BC a 49-6 halftime lead.
With the second half being played under a running clock, place kicker Tristin Skinner added a 32-yard field goal and Bonner later added another touchdown to close out the scoring for the Renegades.
Bakersfield travels to Torrance next Saturday, September 10 to take on long time opponent EL Camino before returning to Memorial Stadium for a 4pm contest versus Gold West.
