Bakersfield, CA – Bakersfield College's Rich Hughes announced this week that he is stepping away for one year as the head men's basketball coach. In the time away from the basketball program he will continue to teach classes in the college's kinesiology department.
At the end of the 2019-20 season he had completed 15 seasons as head coach and is currently the all-time winningest coach in Renegade men's basketball history with 267 victories.
"We are supportive of the decision made by Coach Hughes to step down from leading the program for the year", said BC Vice President Zav Dadabhoy. "He has been a constant for such a long period of time with our men's basketball program and guided many student athletes on to greater success at the next level. We are thankful to him for the many years and long hours he has spent developing the men's basketball program here at BC."
In his time at BC he has placed 59 student athletes at four-year schools, coached a total of 53 All-Conference players, 9 Conference MVP's, 8 All-State players and two California State Players of the Year.
Over the years Coach Hughes' Renegade basketball teams have accumulated seven 20+ win seasons, captured three Western State Conference Championships, made nine state playoff appearances with one appearance in the state final four. He has also been named Western State Conference Coach of the Year three different times.
Before coming to BC, he was head coach (2004-05) and an assistant coach (1996-04) at Allan Hancock College. Prior to that he was the Assistant Varsity Coach at Templeton High School (1995-96).
The search for a one-year replacement for the program is already underway.
