CLIMBING COACH JACOBS' LADDER RIGHT INTO A TOP TEN RANKING IN SOCAL

The Bakersfield College Men's Tennis team has worked their tails off in 2017, and it hasn't gone unnoticed by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The governing body released their regional rankings Friday morning with the Renegades rounding out the top 10 in ultra-competitive Southern California.

The Renegade Men have endured their own brutal "Ides of March" that would have assasinated the spirit of lesser teams; they played eight matches between March 1st and 16th, including a three day swing that saw them beat conference foe Victor Valley at home (7-2) Thursday, March 2nd, then losing a back and forth battle at Fullerton (4-5), and then returning home immediately to beat LA Pierce (7-2) the very next day!

After a three day break, they got back to work Tuesday, March 7th with another 7-2 win over Victor Valley, but this time on the road. The next day, the hosted a tough Folsom Lake team and lost 8-1.

But the oven-much like Bakersfield-was just getting hot.

Perennial conference powerhouse Glendale (10-3, 5-2) came to town for BC's third straight match in as many days and handed the 'Gades a 9-0 loss on the 9th, but there wasn't much time-or need-to mull over the loss as non-conference studs Orange Coast College (12-3, 3-3) rolled into town Friday the 10th and put the well-worn team through the paces on the way to a 9-0 defeat.

While some teams may have benefitted from a six day break, these warriors slowed down enough to notice a few injuries and lingering illness. The team was also left short-handed for the best possible reason; #4 Mario Cabaloza is currently fulfilling his military reserve training requirements. Despite those obstacles, BC made LA Pierce fight for every point in a 6-3 road loss last night.

If the casual observer judges these Renegades-or any Renegade for that matter-by scoreboard alone, they are missing the big picture. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association didn't miss a detail this time around, and folks in the know believe this team will prove the ranking out.

As Coach Nick Jacobs said early in the season, "This team is balanced and competitive, the lineup could change week to week," and that should keep things tough on opponents for the rest of the season.
