Volleyball Sweeps Mt. SAC and Fullerton on Opening Day

BAKERSFIELD, CA – The Bakersfield College Volleyball team opened up the 2019 season by hosting the Bakersfield Quad on Saturday, August 31 playing against both Mt. SAC in game one and Fullerton in game two. In a show on dominance they swept both opponents in three straight sets to move quickly move to 2-0 on the year.

Game 1 vs. Mt. SAC

BC didn't waste any time hitting the ground running to take a 3 set victory over the Mounties. The 'Gades led the entire match to start out their 2019-20 season over Mt. San Antonio College (25-8, 25-20,25-21).

"I thought we did great; we were trying to focus on rhythm and being in sync. There is a lot of excitement when you start the season, so you have to get pass the first set jitters" said coach Carl Ferreira.

The jitters did not show on the BC women's volleyball side as the 'Gades stole the show taking a 11-3 lead before the first timeout. Mounties trailed far behind in the entire first set giving BC the set win with a service error, 25-8.

Set 2 was a tighter battle as Mt SAC kept the 'Gades on their toes after tying the game twice at 14 and 15 points. However, the Renegades quickly came back to take their lead to win the set by another error from the Mounties.

In the third set, BC sprinted out to 4-0 lead until Mt SAC tied it up at 5. Renegades extended their lead, but the Mounties were right behind them never letting BC lead by more than 3 points to try and force the match to another set. 21 points is all the black and maroon would score and give Bakersfield College women's volleyball their first match win of the season, 25-21.

Coach Ferreira gave high praises to freshman, Sophia Palm. "She was off the charts, fantastic. It's the first time in her entire career that she is ever setting. I am beyond proud the way she was able to handle the game in her first collegiate match." Palm finished the first match with 7 digs.

Libero Jessica Merante and Penelope Zepeda led the Renegades with 17 digs while Lani Camarillo completed the first match with 12 kills.
