Volleyball Moves to Round 2 of CCCAA SoCal Playoffs With Win Over Chaffey

BAKERSFIELD, CA – The Bakersfield College volleyball team was locked in for a battle with the 10th seed Chaffey Panthers to get to the next round of the 2019 CCCAA playoffs and not have their season come to a close. In the end, the Renegades would take a three set sweep to see their playoffs chances continue and take one step closer to landing a spot in the State Championships.

"It's great to get this first match out of the way, having been off for 18 days you know we were going to be excited to play but you didn't know if we were going to have rhythm," said head Coach Carl Ferreira on being able to get out the first playoff game jitters.

Middle Blocker Alyson Dees started the scoring drive for the `Gades in set 1 with Chaffey getting on the board quickly after that. Fortunately, the Panthers only got as close as a tie at 4-4 in the first set because BC took the game from there with a long rally then sealing the first match at 25-13.

In the second set the match took a slight turn as the Panthers started off with a point by an out of bounce hit from the Renegades. BC took the next point and went on a 12-6 run with sophomore Penelope Zepeda serving eight in a row. At 19-8 Chaffey would get the ball back to try and scratch at BC's lead but only managed to add five more points to give the second set to the Renegades, 25-13 again.

Freshman Lanie Camarillo would once more get the `Gades on the board first and help BC go on an 11-5 run before a timeout would be called by the Panthers. Chaffey took advantage of their short break as they clawed at Bakersfield's lead to only be down by two going on its largest run, 6-2, of the night. That run gave the Renegades the much-needed fire to take it to the next level and finish the game, 25-15 with an easy match point ending with just a tap in the sweet spot.

Leading the Red and White was outside hitter Zepeda with 11 kills and 10 digs followed by Dees with 7 kills. Sophomore Jessica Merante assisted the team with a total of 13 digs.

With the win, Bakersfield will move on to the second round of the CCCAA SoCal Regionals traveling to San Diego to take on Grossmont on November 30th. The winner from that match will move on to CCCAA State Finals. Stay up on the CCCAA Volleyball playoffs through this link.
