Bakersfield, CA – Point by point, set by set, the moto of the Bakersfield College Volleyball team who fought their way back after falling in the first set to the visiting Fullerton College Hornets in a loud Gil Bishop Sports Center for the first round of playoffs. The Renegades move on to round two after defeating FC, 3-1.
The Hornets jumped out the gates ready to show the number one team in the south what they were made of. FC quickly led 5-0 in the first set as BC was forced to call a timeout. Unfortunately, Bakersfield continued to struggle and only went on a short 4-0 run to try and crawl into Fullerton's lead but the Hornets ran with the first game, 25-18.
A different story for the second set as the Renegades gets on the board first and led 8-3 at the first timeout. FC goes on a 3-0 run at 16-9 before serving out of bounds but would take the ball back and try to crawl into BC's lead by going on another run (4-1) at 17-13. The Hornets only nabbed one more point in the set and Bakersfield wins, 25-14.
Once again Bakersfield is on the board first. Setter Samantha Smith assisted the Gades by serving seven times in a row to give them a large lead and force FC to take a timeout. BC proceeded to increase their lead and take the third set in fashion with a kill from freshman Tia Jules, 25-15.
A back-and-forth battle in the final set started out. Each team traded point for point until BC goes up 11-7 and pressures the Hornets to take a timeout. Fullerton tried to sting their way back and close up the gap by only trailing by 3 points at 17-14. Bakersfield focused point by point as FC was working their way in but the match ends in 4 sets total as the Gades win 25-20.
With the win, the Gades will move onto round two and host Orange Coast on Saturday, November 27th at 6pm.
