BAKERSFIELD, CA – The Bakersfield College Football team hosted Golden West College at home in Memorial Stadium during week four of the football season and came away with a 20-19 loss.
Trailing 20-13 and facing a fourth down at the Golden West 21-yard line, BC quarterback Braden Wingle scrambled for 12 yards keeping the hopes alive for a last-minute Renegade victory. Four plays later Wingle's 8-yard completion to Shane Jones brought BC to within one point of tying the ballgame. Choosing to go for the victory instead of the tie with the extra point attempt, Bakersfield came up short as the two-point conversion fell incomplete allowing Golden West to escape with the 20-19 victory.
BC led 10 -7 after a first half that featured three Golden West turnovers. BC capitalized on a fumbled punt by the Rustlers at the 2-yard line. A couple plays after the fumble recovery, sophomore Isaiah Martin took advantage of the short field and punched in a touchdown from the 1-yard line.
The second half picked up for both teams with the Rustlers starting off a scoring drive to lead by four points with ten minutes left to play in the third quarter. A Renegades drive stalled as they settled for a 38-yard field goal by Paxton Winders to bring BC within one.
Into the fourth BC would eventually force a turn over with a little less than 9 minutes left on the clock however, Bakersfield would only hold the ball briefly as it was intercepted by Golden West at the BC 15 yard line for a touchdown. The Rustlers missed the PAT which would come into play during BC's final procession of the game.
Offensively the Renegades tallied 227 yards of total offense to 293 for Golden West. Quarterback Braden Wingle was 16 of 31 for 188 yards and one touchdown.
BC now falls to 1-3 on the season and will next travel to Orange Coast this coming Saturday, October 5th at 6pm and then return home after a bye week on October 19th for homecoming.
