SANTA BARBARA, CA - Bakersfield came up just short on the road Friday night, falling 81–79 to Santa Barbara in a tightly contested matchup at Robertson Gym. Despite shooting an impressive 59.3% from the field and dominating the paint with 60 points inside, the Renegades couldn't overcome turnovers and a strong perimeter showing from the Vaqueros.
Freshman Zykiar Henderson delivered one of the best performances of the young season, pouring in a game-high 35 points on an incredible 15-of-19 shooting while adding 13 rebounds for a double-double. His energy fueled Bakersfield's late push, but Santa Barbara matched key plays down the stretch to hold on. Bakersfield trailed by four at halftime and edged Santa Barbara 40–38 in the second half, but the final possession opportunities didn't fall their way as the Vaqueros held on.
Sophomore Joaquin Rios added 14 points on efficient 6-of-9 shooting, while teammate Markell Brooks stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. Freshman guard James Miller chipped in five points, six assists, and a team-high six turnovers in a challenging but active night running the offense.
Bakersfield's bench provided a major spark, contributing 44 points, led by Henderson and timely minutes from Elijah Wade and Zach Garnett.
The Vaqueros countered Bakersfield's inside dominance with 10 made threes and a balanced attack. Santa Barbara capitalized on Renegade mistakes, converting 28 points off turnovers to tilt the game in their favor.
The Renegades (3–2) will return to action this weekend for the Milt Stowe Classic at Porterville College.
