BAKERSFIELD, CA - The Bakersfield College volleyball team opened its 2025 season on Saturday at the annual BC Quad, facing off against San Diego Mesa and San Diego Miramar inside the Renegade Athletic Complex (new gym).
In their first match of the day, the Renegades battled hard but fell in four sets to San Diego Mesa (25-9, 19-25, 25-13, 25-10). BC responded with energy in the second set to even the match, but Mesa's offensive balance proved too much down the stretch. Alexandra Watts led the Renegades with eight kills, while Maya Barron added four kills and four assists. Freshman outside hitter Lainey Sterling chipped in five kills, and setter Taylor Drake distributed eight assists with four digs. Defensively, libero Chloe Lopez anchored the back row with 14 digs.
In the next match, Bakersfield showed resilience against San Diego Miramar but came up short in a straight-set decision (25-18, 25-13, 25-22). The Renegades pushed the Jets to the wire in the third set, highlighted by Barron's six kills and three blocks. Watts added two kills and one ace, while Sterling posted two kills and two aces of her own. Drake guided the offense with nine assists and six digs, and Lopez once again stood out defensively with a team-high nine digs.
The Renegades continue non-conference action this week as they look to build momentum. BC will host its' first NorCal and SoCal Showcase that will take place over two days.
