BAKERSFIELD, CA – The Bakersfield College women's volleyball team started its season a bit rocky, but after three losses while hosting the Norcal Socal Showcase interim head coach Penelope Zepeda and her team found a way defeating Sierra College in a thrilling five-set battle (25–22, 23–25, 27–25, 12–25, 15–11) inside the Renegade Athletic Center. The victory marks the first career win for Zepeda, who took the reins of the program this season.
The Renegades showed resilience, holding off Sierra in a tense third set before closing the match with a decisive fifth-set performance. Mariah Sierra set the tone with a strong all-around effort, recording 8 kills, 20 assists, and 7 digs, while Alexandra Watts added 9 kills. Chloe Lopez anchored the back row with 16 digs, and Taylor Drake directed the offense with 16 assists.
At the service line, BC made a difference with 13 aces, including 5 from Keira Wolf and 3 from Anabel Naranjo, helping swing momentum in key moments. Defensively, the Renegades tallied 19 team blocks, with Watts and Maya Barron combining for 12 block assists.
With the win, Bakersfield sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting year under Coach Zepeda's leadership. Up next, the team will travel to LA Mission for the 4th Eagles Invitational.
