BAKERSFIELD, CA –
Despite recording statistical advantages in Total Offense, 1st Downs, Plays, Passing and Rushing Yards, Bakersfield College fell 21-13 to Golden West Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium.
Unfortunately, two fumbles by the Renegades proved to be the difference in the game, the first occurring on the opening kickoff as Golden West recovered BC's fumble at the Renegade 25 yard line and four plays later scoring on a 12-yard TD pass just 1:58 into the game.
The Renegades would answer later in the quarter with a Carlos Villa 31-yd Field Goal after an 8 play, 61 yard drive stalled at the 8:33 mark. Later in the 1st quarter, Golden West would take a 14-3 lead capitalizing on a shanked BC punt that gave the Rustlers possession at the BC 19 yard line. The Renegades closed the gap to 14-10 just before halftime as quarterback Malachi Statler connected with wide receiver Dylan Johnson on a 12-yard touchdown pass.
What proved to be the turning point of the game occurred at the 9:00 mark of the 3rd quarter when Golden West recovered a BC fumble at the Renegades 47 yard line and took it into the endzone and expanding their lead to 21-10. In the 4th quarter, Villa connected for his 2nd field goal of the game, a 22 yarder at the 12:35 mark to draw BC to within eight, 21-13. The Renegades had a final chance to tie the game as they took possession at their own 45 yard line with 39 seconds remaining but after driving down to the Golden West 18 yard line with 3 seconds left on the clock, the game ended on an incomplete pass.
Sophomore Carson Woods threw for 18 Yards, spreading completions to multiple targets, including freshman teammates Jahiem Alexander (57 yards), Ben Spears (43 yards), and Johnson (34 Yards, TD). On the ground, sophomore Ian Jernigan led the rushing attack with 49 yards.
The Renegades (2-2 overall, 0-1 conference) will hit the road next weekend to Pasadena City College before their bye week. The Renegades next home game at Memorial Stadium is October 11 at 4pm.
