BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — College of the Canyons shot just under 50 percent from the floor and saw four starters score in double figures, but was tasked with overcoming a 51-point performance by Bakersfield guard Tucker Eenigenburg that left the Cougars on the short end of a 87-81 final score on Saturday night.
The scoring output by Eenigenburg overshadowed an otherwise solid offensive performance by the Cougars (10-12, 1-2).
COC freshman Anthony Simone converted on 13-of-17 shots for a team-high 28 points.
Sophomore Michael Kalu scored 19 points. Jacob Lilley finished with 14 points and seven assists, and Frankie Campbell recorded 13 rebounds and scored 10 points.
Bakersfield (12-10, 3-1) played with an eight-man rotation, but didn't need much more than Eenigenburg. Shahadah Camp was the next closest Renegade with 14 points.
The Gades shot 53.3 percent as a team and nearly 84 percent from the foul line, going 31-of-37. By comparison, the Cougars attempted just 14 free throws.
Canyons won the battle of the boards 35-24, but was ultimately thwarted by the performance of Eenigenburg.
With just five regular season games remaining, the Cougars will return home to host West L.A. College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
