Coach Hernandez is a graduate of Arcadia High School (1980) and earned a B.S. in Biological Psychology with a minor in Coaching from UC Santa Barbara (1985), specializing in gymnastics and softball.
With nearly four decades of coaching experience, Coach [Name] has led and developed athletes at multiple levels. He served as Head Track Coach at South Gate High School (LAUSD) from 1987–2006, Assistant and Head Track Coach at Golden Valley High School (KHSD) from 2006–2022, and most recently as an Assistant Track Coach for Pole Vault at Bakersfield College (2022–present).
Dedicated to mastering his craft, he has trained under some of the nation’s most respected pole vault clinicians, including Jan Johnson (Sky Jumpers Camp, 1991–92, 1995), Brian Yokoyama (Mt. SAC Clinic, 1993–95), and Bob Fraley (Pole Vault Summit, 2023).
Throughout his career, Coach Hernandez has guided numerous athletes to success at the league, section, and state levels. Highlights include:
• 1996: South Gate High’s Alfredo Llamas (15’3”, 5th at State Finals) and Leo Abad (14’6”, 12th at State Semifinals)
• 2011–2017: Multiple CIF Central Section finalists from Golden Valley HS and Stockdale HS, including a 3rd-place finish at Masters (2016)
• 2023: At Bakersfield College, coached Tucker Monaco (13’11” PR, 2nd at CCCAA State Decathlon) and Jack Evans (13’5” PR, 1st at Western Conference Championship)
