Jameik Riviere has scored and dished assists at will this season, but it was his defensive play that helped BC to their first playoff win.

The #9 seed Bakersfield College men's basketball team (24-5) beat #8 Moorpark (20-9) 96-78 on the road Friday to advance to round three of the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships.

Two-time Conference MVP Deandre Dickson led the Renegades with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

"We played very well, the defense was on point, even though we gave up 78," Coach Rich Hughes said, " I think there were a lot of questionable calls in the second half, but our defense was on point."

Point guard Jameik Riviere scored 18 points, but shot only 4-14 from the field, but Hughes said that was beside the point.

"Jameik shot low, but he guarded Justin Eisen, (Moorpark's) top three point shooter, and held him to zero points and he also picked up eight assist, so he had a great night for us," Hughes said.

The Renegades were 24 of 29 from the free throw line, while Moorpark shot only 14 of 20 and that was a key difference in the outcome.

"There were a lot of questionable calls in the second half, but when our guys went to the line, they were making the shots. To beat them by 18 at their place was huge. They gave us a good game, but we were too good tonight," Hughes said.

All of BC's starters put up double-digit scoring numbers. In addition to Dickson and Riviere, Lawrence Moore scored 18 on 7-11 shooting, James Pendleton picked up 16, and Nick Velasquez scored 17 on 6-12 shooting from the field, and hit five of his 10 three-point attempts while also pulling down 10 rebounds.

"It was a great team win," Hughes said.

BC will play the winner of #1 Saddleback and #16 Mira Costa on Wednesday, March 2nd in Round Three of the State championship tournament.
