Despite a late-game rally the Bakersfield College women's basketball dropped its season opener, 86-73, to visiting Riverside City College on Thursday night.

The Renegades out-scored the Tigers 28-19 in the fourth quarter.

Marissa Figueroa had 16 points and Kennedy Nielson chipped in 14 points for BC.

The Renegades aggressive pressure defense had 20 steals and forced RCC into committing a total of 37 turnovers.

Chiderah Uzowuru scored a game-high 23 points for Riverside, which never trained after the first quarter and never by more than two points.

"I'm really proud of my kids," BC coach Paula Dahl said. "We really battled. We did not give up. We kept going hard and we made a bunch of huge plays at the end. I'm excited for this year. We're young but there's so much growth to be had. I'm just very pleased with performance we put out there. Riverside is a great team."
