BAKERSFIELD, CA – It was all smiles for the Bakersfield College's Volleyball team Wednesday night as they hosted conference opponent, the Citrus College Owls. Outside hitter Penelope Zepeda led the way for the Renegades with 17 kills as the `Gades soared over the Owls, 3-0 keeping BC undefeated in WSC conference play.
"We are always ecstatic to play and to get out there. Wasn't our best game but we got through it…when you are at a C level it's tough to get to an A level, but we tried to do that every game," said Head Coach Carl Ferreira.
It would be Citrus College to start off the game and take the first two points in the match, however, Bakersfield College did not let two points phase them. BC quickly got back to their winning ways and came back to tie the match then runaway with the lead. BC led 11-7 before the Owls broke for a timeout and eventually took the first set by an Owl hitting too far to the left, 25-13.
Tied twice early in the match, the Owls had the Renegades on their toes throughout the second set. Sophomore Penelope Zepeda would be the lady of the set and quickly get BC back on track by spiking the ball right off an Owl and Citrus wouldn't be able to recover from that hit early on. Late in the set Citrus would find a way to climb their way back and take a 5-1 run to come close to BC's 23-21 lead but again it would be Zepeda to find a way and knock one right down the middle to give BC the second set, 25-21.
Momentum from the first two sets would give the Renegades the fire under their feet and not cool down until the final point. Bakersfield led the way with their largest lead of the night 14-3 but Citrus did not want to go home without a fight. The Owls went on their grandest run of the night, 11- 4 but were too far behind to even touch the `Gades. Bakersfield would earn their final point right in the sky of Owls, 25-17.
The Renegades head out for two road matches to first take on the Santa Monica Pirates on Friday, October 4th and then West LA the following Friday, October 11th at 6pm. BC will return home Wednesday, October 16th to take on Antelope Valley College.
